Carl August Ruoff was born in Wisconsin 09/30/1892. His family moved to washington in about 1902. Carl began working as a Conductor for the Seattle trolley system about 1913-1914. He held this job until about 1917 when he was fired after a trolley accident. While a conductor on the Queen Anne run, the motorman on the trolley did not set the brake on the "Counterbalance" that runs down Queen Anne Avenue, a very steep hill located in North Downtown Seattle. The trolley ran quickly to the bottom where it came to a crashing stop. Nobody was injured, but Carl was let go.
