Theodore Merton Ruoff tried to Join the Navy in 1939 but was rejected for medical reasons. After December 7th 1941, he tried again and was accepted. Because of his experience in the Grocery Store in Port Angeles, he skipped boot camp and was made a Yeoman Third Class. He later switched to a Storekeeper rating and retired from the navy as a Chief Warrant Officer. It was during the war while stationed in Seattle that he met his future wife, Rita Flaherty Ruoff.
